I auditioned on the 22nd of Jan. in Prins Albert (Karoo) for a TV cooking
competition program. Something like
Master Chef, but an Afrikaans version for KykNet (channel 144). The theme of
the program is nostalgic food with an
accompanying story. With the entering form, we had to write an essay no less
than 600 words, why you think you qualify as a home cook who can cook and tell
stories about their food.
My cold dish (prepared
at home and then driven 2 and a half hours to the stinking hot 38 degrees Prins
Albert) that I presented in the first part of the audition, was snoek (terrine
in
a fish shape) and sweet potato (steamed
and then flash fried in a griddle pan) with Hanepoot grape jam (diluted
with brandy and chilly added).
The
second part was to cook something including flour, veggies or fruit. I made mini pancakes (10 cm diameter) with
caramelized apples and gooseberries. The
third part was a TV interview.
Nationally, only 10 home cooks and 10 professional
chefs will be chosen. They will let us
know in 10 days’ time who got through. Filming will
take place in Prince Albert and will start mid-Feb. until mid-March.
Here are my 2 dishes:
